Employees’ State Insurance Scheme, the premiere Social Security Scheme under Government of India was launched in the State of Kerala during the year 1956. Initially it was implemented in 7 important industrial centres of Kerala including Ernakulam. Though the Scheme initially covered only Factories employing 20 or more persons, it was later extended to shops, restaurants, cinema Theatres, transport establishments etc. As the industrial development of Kerala picked up, the threshold limit for coverage, was reduced to 10 persons. Moreover, new sectors like educational institutions (partly or un-aided) and medical institutions were brought under coverage of ESI Scheme. The Scheme now covers nearly 6 Lakh insured persons and their families in the State of Kerala in 50 Centres.
